Before we look at eyeball tattoo ideas from samples of work completed at our tattoo shop, we must mention the most notable artist to ever work in the genre; Rick Griffin.

Griffin got his start working with John Severson who was an artist, photographer, writer, editor, and creator of SURFER Magazine. Beginning in 1961, Griffin produced a cartoon series for SURFER which lasted for about a decade before he got involved in the psychedelic art movement of the late 1960s and early 70s. It was during this era that Griffin’s famous eyeball took form. His surfing eyeball was spotted on numerous t-shirts and publications, while his ‘Flying Eyeball’ Jimi Hendrix concert poster made its way onto the walls of bedrooms and living spaces of America’s free-spirited people.
